let's go to the PWT
This is a generic Pokemon AU meme of sorts! I'm gonna put prompts in the comments and whatnot. The premise of the AU is that characters are going to go the PWT. They could be a challenger, an invited member, or just there to watch the battles.
As per custom, all the gym leaders attending the Pokemon World Tournament are invited to a tea reception before the ceremony kicks off the next day. It is intended to be a time for these elite to mingle, have conversation, and share their experiences in their regions. There are pastries and finger food from every type of cuisine, as well as Poffins and snacks for the Pokemon attending alongside their trainers.
Taka was invited alongside all the Hwanshu Gym Leaders, but only three of them accepted the invitation. His brothers and father ran the gym in his absence - this excursion is more of a learning opportunity than anything else. His Pokemon are all out beside him - the Klefki and Azumarill chewing happily on their Poffins, the Gardevoir reading, the Sylveon chasing another Gym Leader's Jolteon around the hall, and the Togekiss accompanying him wherever he goes.
Perhaps his Sylveon has careened into you, or the Klefki attracting the attention of one of your more playful Pokemon. Or maybe it's his general countenance of calm and reserved observation that sets him apart from the rest - it's a bit rare to see a Gym Leader with all of their Pokemon out, but it's just the custom where he comes from. The Key Stone he wears on his collar as a pin occasionally flashes in the light, too.
While other Gym Leaders may be open to mingling, instead he chooses to sit in an unobtrusive corner and take notes. On what? That, is an unknown unless you ask.
[ If this doesn't interest you, just post with your own, or ping me on plurk! I can come up with something. ]

"So I heard. I haven't had a chance to visit it yet, though I'd like to at some point soon. It's been interesting learning about your culture."
no subject
"Likewise. I've found that we have a lower level of technology, but as a result a deeper bond between each Trainer and their Pokemon. A human bonding with more than seven Pokemon is very rare. Most of us have three to four, and one-to-one pairs are common, too."
He himself was bonded with his Togekiss at a very young age, and ended up being a Fairy-type specialist.
no subject
The Absol dips her head in a nod. He'd been pretty young when she found him and dragged him to safety. "She was the first Pokemon that was really 'mine' - though I'm not so sure she doesn't consider it the other way around."
no subject
"I met my partner, Kibou, as a very young child. In fact, I cannot really recall how we met, only that we have been with each other for a really long time." He indicates the Togekiss chatting with a Glaceon some distance away.
"Ah, I forget my manners. May I have your name?"
no subject
"Ah, that's right. My name is Naoya." He extends his hand to shake the other's. "And your name?"
no subject
He takes Naoya's hand and shakes it politely. "Taka. Gym Leader of Tamaerlein City - though my father is standing in while I am here. I am a Fairy-type specialist."
As should be evident by the Gardevoir sitting on a nearby couch reading, and the Klefki chattering away with another Gym Leader's Skarmory.
no subject
He drops his hand and looks around at Taka's team before reaching down to give his Absol some headpets. "I did manage to snag myself a slot on the lineup, though. I'm no gym leader - though if a slot for a dark or ghost type gym opens I wouldn't say no. I just don't see a reason to limit myself to a single area of expertise."
no subject
Kind of like what he is doing now, but he would never say that to anyone.
"I suppose I enjoy the challenge. I also communicate best with Fairy-types, so I can get to know my team better."
no subject
He has confidence in Kazuya's abilities, but he's not about to hold his hand with it. He's old enough to succeed or fail on his own. "I've never found that type easy to communicate with, personally."
no subject
He tilts his head a little at Naoya's next statement.
"Well, to each their own. I have less success with Dark- or Dragon-types, myself." It might have something to do with type matchups, or personality matchups.
no subject
"We've been out in the desert for a while, so this is more stimulation than she's seen in a few weeks."
no subject
The mention of the desert interests him, though.
"Were you doing research in the desert?"
no subject
no subject
"It would be intriguing to find out what other ruins could exist in this region." Unova had particularly rich legends, after all, and the Relic Castle could turn out more clues.
"Does your specialty extend to anything else?"
no subject
no subject
"You might want to drop by Hwanshu sometime. Most of it is rarely explored, given our lower reliance on technology. We do not have many unique species, but many of them live in niche habitats."
no subject
Storm comes bounding back, nuzzling into his leg.
no subject
"There should be an embassy in Castelia, last time I heard. You should be able to get a visa there."
His Gardevoir looks up from the book momentarily, but says nothing.
no subject
He looks up at Taka for confirmation.
no subject
"That should be the schedule, yes. Though I won't be averse to a little spar, if you're up for it." Seeing that they would most likely be in different brackets.
no subject
No sense in wearing everyone out, after all.
no subject
"Yes, it should. Let me ask my team."
Hikaru looks up from his seat at that. I won't mind. And I think Kushinada might need the exercise.
At that, a Sylveon grooming herself nearby looks up, irritated. Hey, who're you calling fat?
Taka chuckles a little. "He means well. We haven't battled together too often, after all."
no subject
no subject
"Well, that's settled then." Taka said after giving everyone a customary glance. "These three are alright with it."
no subject
He considers his options for a moment before grabbing two Pokeballs out of his pocket and releasing a Gengar and a Magnezone. "How about these two?"
no subject
He had already started formulating a strategy, just looking at them. Gengars are known to be fast and hit hard, but once disabled would have little chance of withstanding direct attacks. The Magnezone would be a tank-type battler, and needed to be taken out with brute force.
Both had elemental advantages against his specialty type.

"I think we can get an empty field here. They're open for us to try out, after all. Shall I?"
After Naoya agrees, he'll go up to one of the attendants and file a request. A few minutes later, they are given passes to one of the many arenas built for the tournament. It's a plain field, with no hazards or objects that could be made use of.
